Amethyst and it's beautiful deep purple colouration means it has long been coveted by royalty and religious groups. The stone can be found in the British Crown Jewels and even nowadays, Bishops have amethyst set finger rings.
Amethyst comes from the quartz family and its colour varies from light violet to a deep purple. Originally the stone was very expensive to buy but since large deposits were found in Brazil in the 1700s, the price dropped. Amethyst is meant to protect the person wearing it from drunkeness, it is said to calm overheating passions, protect against disease and improve intelligence and humility.
Amethst can fade in colour with over exposure to strong daylight. Extremes of temperature can cause cracks or small fractures to the stone.
